Home / Mowing / Watering & feeding
Mow first, then fertilize, then water: fertilizer granules reach the soil better on freshly cut grass, and watering washes them in. Water deeply and early in the day rather than right after every mow. Want it all on one schedule? Get a full-care plan from a local pro. Part of the complete mowing guide.

01 / Guides
- Fertilize before or after mowing? The order that gets the most out of each feeding.
- Should you water after mowing? Timing your watering around the mow.

02 / How to tell your lawn needs water
The best time to water is when the grass asks for it, not on a fixed day. Oklahoma State University Extension recommends watering at the first signs of wilt:
- Footprints stay visible. Walk across the lawn; if the grass doesn’t spring back, it’s short on water.
- The color turns blue-gray. A dull, blue-gray cast replaces the normal green.
- Leaves roll or fold. Blades curl up to save moisture.
When you do water, OSU advises wetting the soil to about 6 inches deep, and early morning is the ideal time. Watering less often but more deeply is what gets the moisture down that far.
Why a little every day hurts. According to OSU, frequent shallow watering encourages shallow roots, soil compaction, thatch and weeds. Deep, less frequent watering does the opposite. That’s also why there’s no need to water right after every mow; our page on whether to water after mowing covers the timing.
03 / Drought in 2026: where lawns were thirstiest
Dry spells make watering and mowing decisions harder. NOAA’s Storm Events Database logged 2,915 county-level drought reports across 31 states from January through April 2026. Six states accounted for most of them:
| State | County-level drought reports, Jan–Apr 2026 |
|---|---|
| Texas | 482 |
| Georgia | 420 |
| Florida | 273 |
| Oklahoma | 207 |
| Nebraska | 122 |
| North Carolina | 116 |
Reports rose every month: 503 in January, 632 in February, 849 in March and 931 in April. That means drought was building just as warm-season lawns were greening up and cool-season lawns were hitting their spring growth.
In a dry spell, the same rules apply with more weight: water deeply at the first wilt signs, mow at the top of your grass’s range, and never take more than a third of the blade. See mowing in summer heat for the height adjustments and mowing height by grass type for your range.
04 / Fertilizer timing by grass type
When you feed matters as much as what you feed. Oklahoma State University Extension gives this timing:
| Grass | When to fertilize | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Cool-season (tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass) | Most of the year’s fertilizer in fall | Leaning on spring feeding |
| Bermudagrass | About two weeks after spring green-up | Feeding before green-up (less effective); feeding after Sept 1 (can hinder winter hardening) |
| Any lawn, quick-release fertilizer | Water it in immediately | Leaving granules sitting on the leaves |
Put that together with the order in the lead and a feeding day looks like this: mow, spread the fertilizer, then water it in. Our page on fertilizing before or after mowing walks through that order in more detail.
Juggling mowing days, wilt checks and a fertilizer calendar is a lot for one lawn. A local crew can run it as a single routine; get a price for mowing and feeding together.
Frequently asked questions
Should I fertilize before or after mowing?
After. Mow first, then fertilize, then water: granules reach the soil better on freshly cut grass, and watering washes them in.
How do I know when my lawn needs water?
Oklahoma State University Extension recommends watering at the first signs of wilt: footprints that stay visible, a blue-gray color, and rolled or folded leaves.
How deep should I water my lawn?
OSU advises wetting the soil to about 6 inches, ideally in the early morning. Frequent shallow watering encourages shallow roots, compaction, thatch and weeds.
When should I fertilize cool-season grass?
Mostly in fall. OSU recommends giving cool-season grasses like tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass most of their fertilizer in the fall.
When should I stop fertilizing bermuda grass?
OSU advises against fertilizing bermudagrass after September 1, because it can hinder winter hardening. Start in spring about two weeks after green-up.
