For most lawns, leaving clippings on the grass is best: they break down fast and feed the soil. Bag them when the grass was too long, wet, or diseased. If you’d rather not deal with it, get a mulching mow quote from a local pro. Part of lawn problems after mowing.

02 / Why leaving grass clippings usually wins
Leaving clippings on the lawn, often called grasscycling or mulch mowing, is the default for good reason. Oklahoma State University Extension recommends against bagging clippings because bagging removes nutrients the lawn would otherwise get back, uses landfill space, and takes more time than mulch mowing.
The trick is mowing often enough that the clippings are short. OSU’s rule is to remove no more than about a third of the leaf at a time. Short clippings sift down between the blades and break down quickly, so you barely see them by the next day. Long clippings sit on top in rows, and that’s when people start reaching for the bag. If you’re unsure which way to go on a given mowing, bag or leave grass clippings walks through the call.
The same idea works for leaves in fall. A light leaf cover can be mulched back into the lawn as you mow, while a heavy drop is a separate cleanup job. See mulch-mowing leaves instead of raking for where the line is. Most professional crews mulch clippings back into the lawn on every visit, so mulching is also what you’ll usually get if you hand the mowing to a local crew.
03 / When to bag grass clippings instead
Mulching isn’t right every time. Bag or rake up clippings when:
- The grass was very long. After a missed week or a vacation, the clippings are too long to sift down and will lie in rows on top of the lawn. Mowing tall grass covers how to bring it down in stages.
- The grass was wet. Wet clippings stick together and drop in clumps instead of scattering.
- The lawn has disease. Bagging keeps infected clippings from being spread back across the lawn.
- Clumps are already sitting on the grass. Rake or bag them up, then see grass clumps after mowing for how to stop them next time.
Once they’re bagged, clippings need somewhere to go. Composting and yard-waste pickup are the usual options, covered in how to get rid of grass clippings. The one place they shouldn’t go is the road: many cities ban it, as explained in is blowing grass clippings into the street illegal. Blow clippings from walks and drives back onto the lawn instead.
04 / Grass clippings and wet grass
Most clipping problems start with mowing at the wrong time. Oklahoma State University Extension advises against mowing wet grass: it is harder to get a quality cut, the clippings clump, and disease spreads more easily. Those clumps then shade the grass underneath and leave the lawn looking patchy.
The fix is mostly patience. Wait until the dew has burned off or the lawn has dried after rain, and if the grass grew tall while you waited, raise the deck for the first pass. Mowing wet grass explains how to tell when it’s dry enough. Good mowing crews work the same way and push a visit back a day or two after rain rather than mowing wet turf.
Done with raking and bagging?
A local crew can mow, mulch and clean up the walks every visit.
